Getting an authentic plate from 1984, need advice and stuff.

Kinja'd!!!

We’ve had the 944 registered as a historical vehicle through Hagerty so my dad can save on insurance, and I can drive my car whenever. I’m getting a regular historical plate, but with my paycheck I’d like to get an authentic plate, this one above actually, because 959 ^_^

The question is, how do I use it once I’ve got it?

Well, I live in NY, so all plates are either Empire, Empire Gold, or Vanity. No vintage style (though we do have historical).

You get a Historic Vehicle plate and carry it with you in the car. In Indiana you have to register the plate to the car, but I'm not sure about Michigan. I think you just use it in Michigan.

Michigan’s historical plates limit the car to show/event use only. It basically turns the car into a collector’s item and takes all the fun out of it.

My uncle has them on all his vintage Volkswagens. His DD is a microbus.

Weird. My dad told me I could still drive it as much as I did this year. Over 6000 miles. Or maybe it was something about Hagerty that he told me?

This might be it: https://www.hagerty.com/Insurance/comp…

Depends on the terms of the policy. I’m sure Hagerty has their own qualifications, whatever they may be. Historical insurance is usually very similar to historical registration.

In Oregon you take the plate into the DMV and while registering the car and instead of Special Interest or SP plates you get a plate tag that replaces the year. I did this on my 68 Camaro a couple years ago. There is a mileage/usage limit but I honestly don’t know how they enforce that since my 33 has had this setup for over 20 years and never had a problem.

Apparently with Hagerty, I’ve got flexible mileage with no real limit. But the only way to find out if that’s true is to drive it until they tell me no. :p

There’s no mileage limit I can find, but I may skip out on the plate if it does that.

well the restrictions are related to the state issued sticker, my insurance doesn’t have any restrictions on driving.

I know where I am from (Mississippi) you can have a tag from the same year as your car, but it has to be for the same county you live in since we have the county names on our regular plates here. My mom has one for her 66 Mustang, but it is for the wrong county so she can’t actually register it for her car.

Insurance allows you to drive as much as you want but as soon as you put a historic plate on the vehicle then you cant drive it daily. A lot of classic car insurance have a milage limit cause of the cars value
